L’esprit d’escalier (literally, stairway wit) is a French term that describes the predicament of thinking of the right comeback too late.
I think we’ve all been there.
Yes! I’ve been there too many times. At least now, when it happens again, I can exclaim, “Non! J’ai l’esprit de l’escalier!” in faux Français; I think it has more flair than the usual, “Oh. Shit.”
